On Focus: Supply Chain Outsourcing (3PL/4PL)
One of the most important reasons why Organizations outsource their Supply Chain & Logistics functions is the need to decrease the number of warehouses, vehicles and excess inventories and to reduce shrinkage, and labor costs. Such moves bring down fixed and working capital investment, Organizations can therefore focus on their core business activities and share the risks.
The Fourth Party Logistics provider (4PL) is a supply chain integrator that organises people – process – technology of its own organisation with complementary service providers to deliver a harmonious supply chain performance. The Third Party Logistics (3PL) is a provider of third-party logistics execution and improvement of specific supply chain functions, such as transportation, freight forwarding, warehousing, value added services, etc.

In the current environment of economic uncertainty, outsourcing of key business services has taken on even greater importance. The cost reduction and value creation opportunities are now even more compelling, however it is also true that contracts and relationships are re-examined and, if necessary, transformed to reflect changing risk dynamics, improvements in technology and a changing supplier landscape. Companies need to ensure that their contracts reflect the outsourcing relationship they want to achieve - it is an unfortunate reality that too many contracts lack sufficient flexibility, are poorly drafted and do not focus the parties on maintaining a close commercial relationship based on shared objectives.
