Pre-Conference Master Class - April 25, 2010

The technological phenomenon of virtualisation is transforming data processing, storage & network asset productivity, delivering sharply reduced operating costs and greater flexibility & agility in the management of infrastructural services. This evolution in technology is having revolutionary impacts on IT Services businesses and on the practice of outsourcing. This transformation scopes the terms ‘the Cloud’ and ‘Cloud Computing’.

The commercial consequences of ‘the Cloud’ were first felt in the consumer & web services market places. Google’s ‘search’ & Amazon’s e-commerce models pioneered the automation of business processes to be delivered as (consumer) services over the Internet. A diversity of companies, established and new, are now developing this business model of automated (business) services delivered over the Internet for Enterprise & Government clients.

Benefits of Attending this Master Class

The Master Class will develop a strategic understanding of ‘the Cloud’ & ‘Cloud Computing’, and of its impact on the IT Services (ITS), IT Enabled Services (ITES), IT Outsourcing (ITO) and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) markets. It will explore the replacement of the long established Facilities Management (FM) model of outsourcing by the new Direct Sourcing of Services (DSS) model, and how ‘the Cloud’ is reshaping key aspects of the offshoring industry. It will address the key operational & contractual issues raised, in particular security, data assurance, IP protection, regulatory compliance and business continuity.

It will also address how best to re-focus the international leverage of the white collar professional (‘offshoring’) away from ‘production factory’ (infrastructural ITO & generic back office BPO) business services and towards the more focused & specialised front-line business services where the human value-add is positively & sustainably rewarded. And it will explore how best to exploit the opportunities ‘the Cloud’ now provides for rapid & competitive ‘apps development’.

Program Outline

08:00 AM - 08:30 AM - Registration

08:30 AM - 10:00 AM - First Session: The Cloud & Cloud Computing – An Evolution in Technology with Revolutionary Business Impacts.

Synopsis: This session will detail the impact of virtualisation in transforming data processing, storage & network asset productivity and how this is impacting IT Services business models and the practice of Outsourcing. It will explain how experience developed in the consumer & web services markets is now being exploited as automated (business) services delivered over the Internet for Enterprise & Government clients. It will tell how companies such as Google, Amazon, Salesforce and Microsoft are entering the IT Services and Outsourcing markets with new and disruptive business models to challenge longer established International Outsourcing Players

10:00 AM - 10:15 AM - Coffee Break

10:15 AM - 12:00 Noon - Second Session: The Transformation of Outsourcing and Offshoring in and by the Cloud.

Synopsis: This session will detail how the Cloud and Cloud Computing is impacting existing IT Services (ITS), IT Enabled Services (ITES), IT Outsourcing (ITO) and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) business models. It will explore how the long established Facilities Management (FM) model of outsourcing is being replaced by the new Direct Sourcing of Services (DSS) model. It will identify the key operational issues raised, such as security, data assurance, IP protection, regulatory compliance and business continuity. It will examine how these transformations are impacting the international IT vendor community – and then examine how these transformations are impacting how the contemporary Enterprise will develop its global technology sourcing strategies, and the additional issues faced (such as overcoming the restraints imposed by legacy infrastructure and systems).

12:00 Noon - 12:30 PM - Prayer Break

12:30 PM - 02:30 PM - Third Session: The Actual Practice of Cloud & Cloud Computing by the Contemporary Business.

Synopsis: This session will focus on the practical details of exploiting the Cloud and Cloud Computing in the contemporary business. It will start by setting out a framework for how contracting practice is developing to address the key operational issues raised in the second session: in particular security, data assurance, IP protection, regulatory compliance and business continuity. It will then explore how best to exploit the new opportunities that ‘the Cloud’ provides for rapid & competitive ‘apps development’ - and how ‘the Cloud’ provides opportunity for innovative small & medium sized ventures to be empowered through the creation of platforms to fuel the development of ecosystems of such ventures. Finally It will explore how the consequence of the automation that underwrites the operations of ‘the Cloud’ is to require a re-identification of where to focus the work of white collar professionals being promoted for ‘offshoring’: in particular in identifying the more focused & specialised front-line business services where professional value-add can be positively & sustainably rewarded.

02:30 PM - 03:30 PM - Lunch

03:30 PM - End of Master Class
